AsteroidOS, an alternative operating system designed to extend the lifespan of aging smartwatches, has been released in version 2.0 with a range of new features and expanded device support.

Originally reported in 2018 as a community-driven project aimed at replacing proprietary smartwatch software, AsteroidOS is intended to give users greater control over older wearable hardware. The latest update introduces features commonly found on mainstream smartwatch platforms, including an always-on display option and gesture-based screen activation. Users can now control music playback directly from the watch interface.

AsteroidOS 2.0 also adds a customizable quick access bar and seven new app launcher styles, offering more flexibility in how applications are displayed. The update includes new wallpapers, expanded personalization settings and design revisions to built-in apps such as weather and timer tools. Support for 20 additional languages has been added, and developers said battery life and rendering performance have been improved.

Compatibility has widened compared with version 1.0. Newly supported devices include the Fossil Gen 4, Fossil Gen 5 and Fossil Gen 6 models, as well as the Polar M600 and several TicWatch variants. Limited compatibility is also available for certain Samsung smartwatches.

Developers caution that installing the operating system is not typically recommended for beginners. Detailed instructions are provided for supported devices, but there have been reports that improper installation can render some watches inoperable, effectively bricking the hardware.
