Garmin has begun rolling out beta software version 17.08 to select smartwatches in its Instinct range, including the Instinct 2, Instinct 2X and Instinct Crossover models. The beta arrives roughly two months after the previous 17.07 stable release, which focused on resolving an issue affecting DogTrack distance readings.

According to Garmin’s change log, the latest firmware does not introduce new features but contains “miscellaneous bug fixes and improvements” specific to the Instinct 2 lineup. The company did not specify the exact issues addressed or enhancements implemented. The forum announcement describing the update stated that beta version 17.08 is “Available OTA”, while the message text instructed users to manually “check for updates,” creating uncertainty about the rollout method.

Typically, beta updates for the Instinct 2 series are delivered automatically when the device is linked to the Garmin Connect app or applied via the Garmin Express desktop tool. It is expected that version 17.08 will follow the same over-the-air deployment process for eligible testers, despite the inconsistency cited in the forum post.

The size of the beta testing pool has not been disclosed, and Garmin has not indicated whether additional devices will be added during the rollout period. The final release of version 17.08 will likely reach all Instinct 2 users once full testing concludes, though no schedule has been provided.

The Instinct 2 remains one of Garmin’s most popular rugged smartwatch lines, with configurations including the 45 mm Solar Graphite edition, which is currently retailing on major e-commerce platforms. Observers note that the beta program has become an important feedback loop for Garmin, helping the company identify and resolve software issues before delivering public builds.
