Apple appears to be preparing the return of the iMac Pro, potentially reviving a higher-performance version of its all-in-one desktop that could appeal to creative professionals long served by the product line.

The current iMac lineup is limited to a 24-inch model powered by Apple’s M4 processor, positioning it largely for home and casual users. More demanding customers, including designers and agencies that once relied heavily on the iMac, are instead directed toward the Mac Studio, MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.

According to MacRumors, evidence of a new iMac Pro has surfaced in the code of an internal Apple kernel debug kit. The code references an iMac identified by the codename “J833c,” paired with a chip known as “H17C,” which the report links to a high-end variant of Apple’s upcoming M5 processor generation.

MacRumors said the discovery suggests active internal testing of the device, writing that the H17C chip is believed to be “the third iteration of the Apple M5,” likely to be marketed as the M5 Max. Such a configuration would mark a significant step up from the current iMac’s specifications.

If launched, analysts expect the new iMac Pro to feature a redesigned thermal system and a larger display to match its performance ambitions. Given the likely price and target market, speculation points to a return of a 27-inch class screen, potentially using high-refresh Mini-LED technology similar to what is anticipated for a future Apple Studio Display.
