An independent game studio is putting a darker twist on one of the most familiar titles in computer history, transforming the classic Solitaire card game into a narrative-driven roguelike experience marked by horror themes and unsettling imagery.

Forbidden Solitaire, developed by Grey Alien Games in collaboration with Night Signal Entertainment, is scheduled for full release in the first quarter of 2026. A playable demo has been available on the Steam platform since Jan. 16.

Solitaire, which has been bundled with Microsoft Windows PCs since the early 1990s, is widely regarded as one of the most played video games of all time. Forbidden Solitaire retains the core card-based mechanics but layers them with combat encounters, monsters, and surreal mini-games, according to footage shown in a recently released trailer.

The game introduces a storyline that departs sharply from the open-ended nature of traditional Solitaire. Set in 2019, the narrative begins when a player discovers a mysterious CD-ROM from 1995 in a second-hand store. The disc contains what is described as a banned game that was “never meant to see the light of day,” drawing players into a mystery that unfolds over several hours of gameplay.

Unlike the original card game, which can continue indefinitely, Forbidden Solitaire is designed to be completed. Developers estimate a total playtime of three to four hours, with story progression integrated into gameplay mechanics, including the option to uninstall the game as part of the experience.

The demo offers between 25 and 45 minutes of content and showcases elements such as “bloody card battles,” game-altering jokers, and a recurring in-game character — a watchful eye embedded in a wall — that functions as an upgrade vendor.

Grey Alien Games is best known for previous card-based titles such as Shadowhand Solitaire and Regency Solitaire. The studio has said Forbidden Solitaire is not affiliated with Microsoft’s official Solitaire franchise. Based on pricing for its earlier releases, the company expects the game to sell for between $10 and $15 when it launches.
