Japanese game company Nintendo has bought Systems Research and Development (SRD), which has been helping it develop games for nearly 40 years.
This acquisition is quite different from its competitors. Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard and Sony bought Bungie, while Nintendo continues to do things its own way, even when it comes to acquisitions.
In a filing filed with the Japan Financial Accounting Standards Foundation, Nintendo announced that it had reached an agreement with SRD that would lead to the acquisition of all of the company’s shares.
After the acquisition closes on April 1, 2022, SRD will officially become a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo, just as The Pokémon Company was at the time of the acquisition.
Even though Nintendo eventually acquired its own company, it didn’t quite match the purchase of Microsoft and Sony, as quoted from Digital Trends, Friday, February 25.
It’s not known exactly what to expect from SRD, but it’s definitely not like Activision Blizzard or Bungie. SRD has been Nintendo’s long-time partner, working out of the consumer’s eye for nearly four decades.
“(The acquisition of SRD) will serve to strengthen the management base of SRD and secure the availability of software development resources for Nintendo, in addition to facilitating anticipated improvements in software development efficiency,” Nintendo said.
SRD has played a role in a large number of the company’s major releases. Having begun collaborating with Nintendo on creating games for the Famicom, SRD has assisted in the development of the original Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros., as well as modern releases including Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
