Apple is reportedly planning to launch an “extreme sport” version for the Apple Watch this year. This smartwatch is expected to have the largest screen of the Apple Watch currently available, with a larger battery and a more sturdy metal casing.
Reported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the Apple Watch Extreme Sports will come with a screen measuring almost two inches diagonally. The screen is 7% larger than the current Apple Watch and the resolution is around 410 x 502 pixels.
Gurman speculates that the larger screen is used to display more fitness and exercise metrics. Talking about fitness and sports, smartwatches are expected to have the ability to detect altitude when climbing and measure the user’s body temperature.
In addition, Gurman says the watch will use a metal that is stronger than aluminum and has a screen that is more shatter-resistant. The smartwatch is also likely to be equipped with a larger battery to accommodate longer workout times.
The extreme sports version of the Apple Watch will reportedly be announced in late 2022 along with two other models, as reported by TechCrunch (8/7). The two models are the Apple Watch 8 and the latest version of the more affordable Apple Watch SE.
The Apple Watch 8, according to Gurman, will retain the 1.9-inch screen, while the Apple Watch SE will be 1.78-inches. The extreme sports version is expected to be more expensive than the current standard Apple Watch which costs $699.
The entire new Apple Watch lineup will be powered by an S8 processor with similar performance to the S7 chip in the Apple Watch 7, Gurman said. Apple usually announces new smartwatches in September, at the same time as the launch of the new iPhones.
