BMW Unveils All-Electric iX5 with Up to 845 km of Driving Range

BMW has unveiled the all-electric iX5, introducing a battery-powered version of its long-running X5 SUV for the first time as the company continues expanding its global electric vehicle portfolio.

Production of the iX5 is scheduled to begin in August at BMW’s manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with the model destined for markets worldwide.

    Long Range and Strong Performance

The iX5 debuts as the iX5 60 xDrive, powered by a 141kWh battery pack paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system.

The powertrain produces a combined 425kW and 805Nm of torque, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds.

BMW estimates a WLTP driving range of between 645km and 845km, depending on wheel size and equipment. Energy consumption is rated between 20.1kWh and 23.9kWh per 100km.

The electric SUV also offers a towing capacity of up to 2,700kg, making it suitable for towing trailers, boats and caravans.

    Ultra-Fast Charging Capability

The iX5 comes equipped with a 22kW AC onboard charger as standard.

For DC fast charging, the vehicle supports charging rates of up to 460kW, allowing the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 23 minutes under optimal charging conditions.

    Advanced Chassis Technology

Every iX5 features adaptive suspension as standard, while buyers can specify Integral Active Steering, which allows the rear wheels to turn by up to 3.2 degrees to improve maneuverability and reduce the turning circle to 12.1 metres.

BMW also offers Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with active roll stabilization to enhance handling despite the vehicle’s approximately 2,900kg curb weight.

    Latest Driver Assistance Features

The iX5 introduces BMW’s newest Level 2 driver assistance technologies, including the “Entry-2-Exit” highway driving function and the “Address-2-Address” urban driving system.

The features enable the vehicle to steer, accelerate, brake, navigate intersections and recognize traffic signals while requiring the driver to remain attentive and supervise the driving process at all times.

    Expanding Electrification Strategy

The launch of the iX5 represents another milestone in BMW’s strategy to electrify its core vehicle lineup.

Alongside the battery-electric model, the company has previously announced plans to introduce a hydrogen fuel-cell version of the X5 beginning in 2028, giving the next-generation SUV one of BMW’s broadest selections of alternative powertrains.

With the iX5, BMW brings battery-electric technology to one of its best-known SUV nameplates, combining long driving range, high-performance charging and advanced driving technologies in the premium midsize SUV segment.
