A fan-made project called CyberMP is aiming to bring a fully functional multiplayer experience to Cyberpunk 2077, transforming CD Projekt Red’s single-player RPG into a shared online sandbox.
Developed by the CyberMP team, the ambitious mod focuses on free-roam multiplayer rather than traditional cooperative story progression. While players will not be able to complete campaign missions or quests together, the platform is designed to support roleplaying communities, custom game modes and open-world multiplayer experiences similar to those found in GTA Online.
Multiplayer Built Around Sandbox Gameplay
Unlike a conventional co-op modification, CyberMP prioritizes synchronized exploration and player interaction within Night City.
The developers envision the platform as a foundation for community-driven gameplay, allowing players to create roleplay servers, racing events, combat scenarios and other custom activities.
Story missions and scripted questlines remain outside the project’s current scope due to the complexity of synchronizing Cyberpunk 2077’s heavily scripted single-player content.
Dedicated Anti-Cheat System in Development
One of the project’s most important technical additions is a dedicated anti-cheat system.
Because Cyberpunk 2077 was originally designed as a single-player title, the game lacks built-in protections against cheats, trainers and gameplay modifications that could disrupt multiplayer sessions.
The CyberMP team confirmed that anti-cheat functionality is being integrated directly into the platform, although specific implementation details have not yet been disclosed.
New Server Infrastructure Improves Stability
Developers have also rebuilt the free-roam server architecture from the ground up to improve stability and support future expansion.
The new framework is designed to simplify custom content creation for other modders and server operators.
In the future, the CyberMP team plans to make the free-roam server package open source, allowing users to host their own servers or use the framework as a foundation for entirely new multiplayer experiences.
Major Technical Milestones Achieved
Recent development updates indicate significant progress toward a playable multiplayer platform.
According to the development team, approximately 200 bugs have been fixed during recent testing phases.
Several major features have already been implemented, including:
Character and Vehicle Synchronization
Players can now see synchronized character appearances across multiplayer sessions, helping create a more consistent shared world experience.
Vehicle networking has also been significantly improved, enabling smoother synchronization of driving and vehicle interactions between players.
Combat and Vehicle Features
The latest builds support combat-capable vehicles, passenger-seat shooting mechanics and synchronized operation of the Basilisk tank.
Internal test footage released by the developers showcases multiplayer races, vehicle combat and player-versus-player encounters running with impressive synchronization.
Communication and Social Features
CyberMP has also added several social tools designed to support multiplayer communities.
These include:
- Text chat functionality
- Enhanced voice communication systems
- An integrated in-game multiplayer overlay
Together, these features aim to create a more immersive online experience for players exploring Night City with others.
Semi-Open Testing Planned
CyberMP remains in active development and is not yet publicly available for download.
However, after completing a series of internal testing sessions, the team is preparing a semi-open test involving selected participants.
If development continues at its current pace, CyberMP could become one of the most ambitious fan-created expansions ever developed for Cyberpunk 2077, offering players a long-requested opportunity to experience Night City alongside friends and online communities.
