A new exploration-adventure game from indie studio The Game Bakers has made a strong debut on Steam following its release on Jan. 29, drawing thousands of players and largely positive early feedback.

The game, titled Cairn, reached a peak of nearly 15,000 concurrent players within its first four days, according to Steam data, marking the most successful launch to date for the developer. It has also accumulated around 5,000 user reviews, with 94% rated positive, reflecting a strong reception among players.

The Game Bakers describes Cairn as a “survival-climber,” a genre blend that focuses on realistic rock climbing mechanics rather than combat or traditional progression systems. Players control Aava, a veteran climber attempting to become the first person to reach the summit of Mount Kami, with no predefined routes guiding the ascent.

Gameplay emphasizes careful decision-making and physical realism. Each of the character’s limbs must be manually positioned, and the absence of a stamina meter requires players to judge fatigue visually. Mistakes can result in falls, sending players back to the last checkpoint, which must be manually established using pitons anchored into the rock face.

In addition to climbing, players must manage limited supplies such as food, water and climbing equipment, though multiple difficulty modes offer assistance for less experienced players. Cairn is currently priced at $26.99 after a 10% launch discount, supports controllers, and includes both story and expedition modes, but does not feature multiplayer.
