Garmin has unveiled one of its most unconventional products to date — a wearable health tracker designed specifically for horses. The Garmin Blaze, released this week, attaches to a horse’s tail using a neoprene cuff and aims to provide owners with insights into their animals’ wellbeing and performance.

The device, which weighs 2.6 ounces, uses optical sensors to monitor heart rate, skin temperature, and other thermal values. Data can be viewed on a connected smartwatch during activity, with alerts sent to riders if heart rate levels become too high. In combination with a smartphone or GPS-enabled smartwatch, the tracker can also display distance covered.

According to Garmin, the Blaze can detect gait changes, offering “additional insights” into a horse’s condition. The cuff’s sensor can be removed for cleaning, and the company says riders may also broadcast data to others in real time.

“This device is intended to provide owners and riders with more detailed feedback on their horses’ health and activity,” Garmin said.

The Blaze is now available through Garmin’s online store at a retail price of $599, with shipping estimated at one to two weeks.
