Garmin has released the GPSMap H1i Plus, a handheld GPS designed for outdoor adventurers who need reliable navigation and the ability to call for help when far from mobile networks.

The device integrates Garmin’s inReach satellite service, enabling SOS alerts, two-way text messaging and even short photo or voice messages. “This gadget can make emergency calls via satellite, even when no mobile network is available,” Garmin said. The system is intended for hikers, climbers and travelers in remote areas.

Navigation is supported by Garmin’s TopoActive maps, satellite imagery and a 3.5-inch touchscreen that can be used to plan routes or locate terrain features. With Garmin LiveTrack, friends and family can follow a user’s position in real time. For longer trips, the unit includes modular mapping options through a subscription service.

Battery life reaches up to 480 hours in expedition mode, with 145 hours under continuous GPS navigation and at least 48 hours when satellite messaging is active. Ruggedized with IP67 waterproofing, the handheld also features dual cameras, a flashlight and voice control for hands-free operation.

Priced at $999, the GPSMap H1i Plus is available now through Garmin’s online store. A standard version without satellite connectivity, the GPSMap H1, is offered at $699 for those who only need mapping and navigation.
