Google announced a significant upgrade to Google Photos, introducing six new AI-powered features designed to simplify editing, boost creativity, and improve how users search their photo libraries. The updates, powered by Gemini’s Nano Banana image model, expand Google’s use of generative AI within Photos for both Android and iOS users.
According to Google, the new tools are aimed at making photo editing “as simple as asking for what you want.” Users can now request complex edits using natural language, such as removing sunglasses, opening closed eyes, or adding smiles. The “Help me edit” function applies these personalized changes using images from private face groups in a user’s library to ensure accuracy. Google said the update extends voice- and text-based editing to iOS users in the U.S., alongside the redesigned photo editor that offers gesture controls and one-tap suggestions.

Creative transformations are also expanding with the introduction of Nano Banana in the Photos editor. The company said users can now reimagine their photos in artistic styles — from Renaissance portraits to mosaic effects or children’s storybook illustrations — by simply describing the desired look. A new “Create with AI” section is rolling out to Android users in the U.S. and India, offering ready-made templates powered by Nano Banana. Personalized templates will also debut soon, creating edits that reflect users’ hobbies and experiences.
In addition to creative tools, Ask Photos, Google’s natural-language search feature, is expanding to more than 100 new countries and 17 additional languages. This tool allows users to locate specific images or retrieve contextual information about photos through conversational queries. Google is also introducing an “Ask” button within individual images, enabling users to request edits, explore related memories, or learn more about what’s in a photo directly from the viewer.

“With the new AI features in Photos, we’re helping users do even more with their memories — from creative restyling to effortless searching — all while keeping their content secure and private,” the company said in its announcement. Many of the features are rolling out this week, with broader availability expected over the coming months.
