Mangmi has revealed new details about its upcoming Pocket Max handheld, announcing that the Android-powered device will feature modular magnetic buttons that allow users to swap the D-Pad and ABXY controls, a feature the company says has not previously appeared on an Android handheld.

In a teaser shared on social media, Mangmi showed the Pocket Max with its D-Pad and ABXY buttons removed, highlighting a magnetic design intended to make the controls easy to detach and replace. The company said the system would allow users to customize their setup, potentially switching to alternative button layouts or replacing the D-Pad with other input modules such as a touchpad.

Mangmi described the feature as a first for Android gaming handhelds, though modular controls have appeared on other platforms. The Windows-based Ayaneo 3, for example, offers modular controls that also extend to its joysticks, while Mangmi’s implementation is currently limited to the D-Pad and face buttons.

The company has not yet disclosed which additional modules will be available at launch or whether third-party manufacturers will be able to develop compatible accessories. However, Mangmi released a short demonstration video showing how quickly users can swap the controls. In its announcement, the company said the Pocket Max would offer “modular magnetic buttons” designed to make customization straightforward for users.

Separately, Mangmi said on its Discord channel that it plans to sell the Pocket Max directly through its own website rather than using a crowdfunding platform, though a release date has not yet been announced. The company has previously confirmed the processor, display specifications and color options for the handheld, as it continues to share information ahead of launch.
