Nintendo Switch 2 owners can now use Google Pixel phones as webcams for the console’s video chat function, expanding the range of compatible devices beyond Nintendo’s own accessory and standard third-party cameras. The capability, confirmed by Android Authority, was not available when the console first launched.
The Switch 2 supports video chat through Nintendo Switch Online and requires a compatible camera. Alongside the official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, priced at around $54, users have been relying on various USB webcams, with Reddit communities compiling lists of models that function correctly. According to the original report, “Reddit users have compiled a list of webcams that have been tested to work with the Switch 2.”

Google Pixel phones now operate as USB Video Class webcams when connected via USB-C. The change appears linked to updates in Android 16 or adjustments made by Nintendo. Once connected, a Pixel device is recognised immediately without the need for additional software.
To activate the feature, users must enable webcam mode by selecting “Webcam” under the “Use USB for” option in the phone’s USB preferences menu. In this configuration, the phone behaves like a standard UVC webcam, allowing seamless integration with the console’s GameChat feature.
GameChat supports up to three friends appearing on-screen alongside a live feed of their gameplay, with an optional background-hiding feature to maximise the view of the game. Nintendo provides further details on its website, accompanied by a demonstration video of the function in use.
