Samsung Electronics is preparing to develop its own custom CPU and GPU architectures for a future Exynos mobile processor, a move that would mark a significant shift toward full in-house chip design, according to industry reports.
The Exynos 2800 chipset, expected to debut in Samsung’s Galaxy S28 smartphone series around 2028, would be the first to rely entirely on Samsung-designed CPU and GPU cores, according to a report by Smart Chip Guide cited on China’s Weibo platform. The report said the project is intended to give Samsung greater control over performance, power efficiency and long-term product integration, similar to Apple’s approach with its proprietary silicon.

Samsung has previously attempted a custom CPU strategy through its internally developed “Mongoose” cores between 2016 and 2020, but the effort was discontinued after the chips drew criticism for heat management and power consumption. The company later returned to using standard ARM CPU designs, though management is now said to believe that advances in process technology, including next-generation 2-nanometer gate-all-around manufacturing, could help address earlier shortcomings.
The report also said Samsung plans to move away from AMD-designed graphics processors in its high-end Exynos chips. Since 2022, Samsung has used AMD’s RDNA-based Xclipse GPUs, which introduced features such as ray tracing to Galaxy devices. If the new strategy proceeds, the Exynos 2800 would feature a fully custom Samsung GPU designed without external licensing constraints.

According to the same report, Samsung views in-house GPU development as a way to better optimize graphics, artificial intelligence workloads and overall ecosystem integration across its Galaxy devices. The shift would follow an interim step with the Exynos 2600, expected in the Galaxy S26 series, which is reported to use AMD’s RDNA4 architecture but with development work carried out internally by Samsung.
