Square Enix is preparing to release the final installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy across multiple platforms without delays, signaling a departure from its earlier PlayStation 5 exclusivity strategy. Development teams are working in parallel to optimize the game for different systems, including the anticipated Switch 2 and Xbox consoles.
The publisher’s shift comes after confirming that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will debut on the Switch 2 and Xbox in January 2026. Rumors suggest that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth may follow on those systems before the end of the same year, paving the way for Part 3 to launch simultaneously across platforms. “Excited fans may be able to enjoy the Square Enix games without long waits,” the article stated.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi explained at the Tokyo Game Show that separate teams have been assigned to manage the projects. One group is dedicated to optimizing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for the Switch 2, while another focuses on the upcoming conclusion of the trilogy. The approach is intended to avoid delays that have characterized earlier releases.
Cross-platform development presents challenges, particularly when adapting to the specifications of different consoles. The Switch 2, while more powerful than its predecessor, still falls behind the PS5 in performance, while the Xbox Series S has memory limitations. Square Enix acknowledged that each system requires tailored optimization to maintain gameplay quality.
Industry analysts note that the strategy of assigning platform-specific teams could reduce compromises for players, though it also carries risks. If any group encounters setbacks, the goal of a unified launch date across all platforms may be difficult to achieve.
