Steam has set a new all-time high for concurrent users, surpassing 42 million players logged in at the same time in early January 2026, according to the latest publicly available data. The milestone underscores the continued growth of the world’s largest PC gaming platform following a strong performance last year.
The new record was reached on Jan. 11, when Steam reported a peak of 42,042,778 concurrent users. The figure exceeds the previous high set in October 2025, when more than 41 million players were online simultaneously, driven in part by the release of several major titles.

Steam’s momentum follows a banner year for the platform. In December 2025 alone, Steam generated more than $1.6 billion in revenue, a level that the original report described as “significantly higher than what Steam made in December 2024,” highlighting the pace at which the business has expanded.
User numbers on Steam have risen steadily over the past several years. The platform first crossed 33 million concurrent users in January 2023, climbed to 36 million by March 2024, and continued to add millions of active users through 2025 before breaking past the 40 million threshold.

Industry observers attribute the growth to Steam’s dominant position in PC game distribution. The platform is estimated to control roughly three-quarters of the PC digital distribution market in the United States and a similar share globally, making it the primary access point for many PC gamers.
The latest record suggests that engagement on Steam remains strong even outside major game launches, reinforcing its role as the central hub of the PC gaming ecosystem as 2026 begins.
