Nighthold: Number 1, a new free-to-play survival base-building game, launched on Steam on Dec. 11 and is beginning to draw a largely positive response from early players, according to user reviews and community feedback.

Set on the hostile planet Sandrax-66b, the game places players in the role of colonists investigating the remains of a crashed corporate starship. Gameplay centers on scavenging resources during the day and preparing for nightly attacks by an enemy force known as the Rot, which shifts the focus from exploration to defense as darkness falls.

The title is being positioned as an introduction to a wider fictional setting rather than a standalone release. It is described as “the first mission in a bigger Nighthold universe,” with a related premium title planned but not yet dated, according to the game’s marketing materials.

A central feature of Nighthold: Number 1 is its fully destructible environment, allowing players to dismantle structures, reuse debris and redesign defenses as threats escalate. Base-building mechanics play a decisive role, with walls, traps and infrastructure determining whether colonies survive repeated Rot incursions and encounters with other hostile forces, including raiders.

On Steam, the game currently holds a “Positive” overall rating based on a small number of early reviews. Players and early-access commentators have praised its day-night cycle and defensive pressure, while also noting steep difficulty spikes. Some community members have described the experience as “chilled yet stressful,” reflecting a balance between methodical preparation and punishing combat for underprepared players.
