Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has confirmed that the company is working on a wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) option for its upcoming Robotaxi service, marking an effort to expand access for passengers with disabilities.
Musk acknowledged the development after references to accessible rides were shared online, including a “Robovan” icon shown in the Robotaxi app. The vehicle design is seen as suitable for conversion into a WAV due to its larger dimensions.

The move highlights Tesla’s intention to make its autonomous fleet more inclusive. A WAV Robotaxi could provide transport for people who cannot drive because of disability or health issues, offering greater independence and reliability compared with conventional ride-hailing services.
Existing services such as Uber and Lyft have introduced accessible options, but availability can be limited and inconsistent, particularly in rural regions. Tesla’s autonomous system is designed to operate without drivers, which could provide more consistent coverage in areas underserved by current providers.
The WAV initiative forms part of Tesla’s broader Robotaxi strategy, which aims to create a global network of autonomous vehicles. Analysts say the inclusion of an accessible option positions Tesla to differentiate its service in a competitive mobility market.
Tesla has not disclosed when the accessible Robotaxi will become available, but Musk’s confirmation signals that accessibility is being factored into the design phase of the company’s autonomous fleet.
