Walmart has announced a partnership with OpenAI to enable customers to shop directly through ChatGPT using its new Instant Checkout feature. The integration aims to make online shopping more seamless by allowing users to browse, plan, and purchase items through conversation while Walmart manages delivery and fulfillment.
The initiative marks a shift toward what the company calls “agentic commerce,” where AI moves from reacting to customer requests to anticipating needs. Through ChatGPT, users will be able to restock household items, plan meals, or discover new products in a more interactive and intuitive way.
Walmart said the collaboration builds on its broader use of AI across operations, including accelerating fashion production, improving inventory accuracy, and reducing customer care resolution times. The company has increasingly used AI to streamline processes and enhance the shopping experience across its platforms.
As part of its digital transformation, Walmart is also expanding AI training for employees, adopting OpenAI Certifications, and introducing ChatGPT Enterprise across internal teams. These programs aim to strengthen the company’s ability to use generative AI tools effectively in daily operations.
The partnership underscores Walmart’s long-term strategy to combine technology with human-centered retail. By integrating AI into everyday interactions, the company aims to simplify how customers shop while maintaining its focus on convenience, affordability, and service.
