U.S.-based company Gneuton has unveiled a thermal distillation system designed to repurpose waste heat from gas turbine-powered artificial intelligence data centers into purified water. The company said the technology, which it patented globally, aims to reduce operating costs and improve sustainability in one of the world’s fastest-growing industries.

The process channels excess heat from gas turbines into a closed-loop distillation cycle, producing clean water without requiring external energy inputs. According to the company, the system is scalable, modular and capable of generating millions of gallons of purified water annually per installation.

AI data centers consume increasing amounts of water for cooling, a trend expected to grow alongside the expansion of advanced computing. Gneuton said its solution could reduce those costs and potentially allow operators to sell excess water or environmental credits.

“At Gneuton, our mission is to transform AI infrastructure from one of the world’s largest consumers of fresh water into massive net-positive sources of fresh water,” Chief Executive Brad Martineau said in a statement.

While optimized for gas turbine-powered facilities, the technology can also be adapted to other industrial heat sources. The company said pilot deployments will begin within six months in North America, Europe and Asia.
