Mewgenics, a turn-based roguelite focused on breeding and battling cats, has reached a peak of more than 65,000 concurrent players on Steam following its Feb. 10 launch, according to data from SteamDB.

Developed by Edmund McMillen, known for The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy, in collaboration with Tyler Glaiel, the game has received an “Overwhelmingly Positive” user rating on Steam, with more than 3,500 reviews. Its early player figures place it alongside some recent high-profile releases on the platform.

The gameplay centers on breeding cats with inheritable traits and deploying them in tactical, turn-based battles against various enemies. Each cat has a distinct set of active and passive abilities, and offspring may inherit characteristics from parent units, adding a strategic layer to team-building.

Mewgenics is currently available with a 10% launch discount running through Feb. 24. Although it does not yet officially support Steam Deck, the game has modest system requirements, including 8 GB of RAM, 6 GB of storage and a quad-core processor released after 2014.

The title’s distinctive art style and dark humor reflect the creative direction associated with McMillen’s previous projects. While many players have praised its originality and mechanics, some users have expressed mixed reactions to its unconventional tone.
