Nintendo fans are speculating that the company’s upcoming September 12 Nintendo Direct, set to run for about an hour, could include the reveal of a new Mario game. The broadcast is expected to commemorate the Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary and may feature more than the recently launched Mario Kart World.
According to leaker SwitchForce, who previously made accurate predictions about Nintendo events, a new Mario title could be unveiled during the livestream. In a cryptic comment on social media, he wrote, “They buy the new systems for the mustache,” in response to a discussion about Nintendo’s next steps.

Players are hoping for a new 3D platformer that builds on the 2017 release of Super Mario Odyssey. Many view such a game as a strong candidate to drive sales of the Nintendo Switch 2, which debuted earlier this year. A previous anniversary showcase in 2020 brought multiple new Mario titles, including Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35 and Paper Mario: The Origami King.
Industry watchers note that while a full launch may not come immediately following the release of Donkey Kong Bananza, Nintendo could preview a future project. Reports suggest that only part of the Odyssey development team worked on the Donkey Kong title, raising expectations that progress on a new Mario installment may already be underway.
With the next Super Mario Bros. movie scheduled for April 2026, some analysts believe Nintendo may align a new 3D Mario release to coincide with the film’s debut, further boosting interest in the Switch 2.
