Garmin has drawn criticism from smartwatch owners after removing a shortcut for activating sleep mode in recent software updates. The change affects several models, including the Fenix 8, Forerunner 570 and other premium devices, following firmware releases 15.16 and 20.19.
The removal, first noticed during beta testing earlier this year, has triggered a wave of complaints across Garmin’s online community and Reddit forums. Users say the missing shortcut complicates what was once a simple feature.

According to Garmin, the adjustment was intentional, aligning sleep mode with the company’s new focus mode system. The update groups multiple focus options under a single menu, requiring users to access sleep mode through this new structure or customize their control menu to include the focus option.
Customers argue that the change makes it harder to enable sleep mode quickly, particularly when preparing to rest. Some have raised concerns that the new system is inconvenient for people with irregular sleep schedules, such as shift workers, who depend on manual activation rather than automated settings.

While a few users have found workarounds using voice commands, many maintain that the overall experience has become less efficient. Garmin has not yet indicated whether it plans to reinstate the shortcut in future software updates.
