Tesla Launches Rental Pilot in California to Attract New Buyers

Tesla has launched a short-term rental program in California, allowing customers to rent its vehicles directly from select company stores starting at $60 per day. The initiative, available between November 1 and December 31, 2025, includes unlimited mileage, free Supercharger access, and the company’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature.

The pilot, which initially covers Tesla locations such as San Diego, appears aimed at boosting year-end sales and reducing vehicle inventory in the United States. The company described the move as an opportunity for potential customers to “try out a Tesla for more than just a few hours,” noting that the program is designed as a standard rental rather than a lease.

Renters can choose from premium versions of the Model 3 and Model Y at $60 per day, or opt for the Model S, Model X, or Cybertruck at prices up to $90 per day. The offer is limited to drivers aged 21 or older holding a valid U.S. license, credit card, and proof of insurance. Vehicles must remain within California, and returns with less than 50% battery charge incur a $30 fee.

To encourage purchases, Tesla is offering a $250 discount to anyone who orders a new vehicle within seven days of completing a rental. The company has not confirmed whether the program will expand beyond California once the trial period ends.

The initiative comes as Tesla faces slowing demand in the U.S. electric vehicle market. Industry analysts say the company is contending with the end of federal tax incentives and a 37% year-on-year drop in net profit in the previous quarter. One Tesla spokesperson said the rental campaign “gives more people a chance to experience our technology firsthand,” signaling a renewed effort to stimulate consumer interest amid tightening market conditions.
