BYD Reveals Redesigned Seagull EV in Chinese Regulatory Filing

The upcoming electric hatchback gains a larger footprint, nearly doubles motor output and introduces optional LiDAR-equipped driver-assistance technology ahead of its domestic debut.

BYD has taken another step toward launching the next generation of its Seagull electric hatchback after submitting the model to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) for regulatory approval.

The latest filing, published in the ministry’s vehicle catalog on July 10, outlines two battery-electric variants that introduce substantial changes in size, performance and technology compared with the current model.

    Bigger Footprint, Stronger Performance

The new Seagull measures 4,205mm long, 1,810mm wide and 1,570mm high, riding on a 2,650mm wheelbase and offering seating for five occupants.

Compared with its predecessor, the hatchback grows by 425mm in overall length while its wheelbase increases by 150mm, positioning it much closer in size to the BYD Dolphin.

The exterior has also been redesigned with slimmer polygon-shaped headlights, flush-style door handles and a full-width rear lighting signature linked by a centrally positioned BYD emblem.

Power comes from a permanent-magnet synchronous motor developed by BYD, delivering 95kW—almost double the 55kW output offered by the existing Seagull. Both variants use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology and have a listed top speed of 150km/h.

    Premium Variant Targets Smarter Driving

The two models differ mainly in equipment levels.

The standard version has a curb weight of 1,180kg, while the higher-spec model weighs 1,255kg due to the addition of advanced sensing hardware.

Regulatory documents show the premium version can be fitted with LiDAR together with front, rear and side radar sensors, enabling more sophisticated driver-assistance capabilities.

BYD previously introduced LiDAR to the Seagull lineup with the 2026 model, making it one of the first vehicles in China’s A00-class electric vehicle segment to offer the technology. The system works alongside the company’s God’s Eye B intelligent driving platform, which supports urban navigation-assisted driving.

    Awaiting Official Launch

In China, publication in the MIIT vehicle catalog is a mandatory step before new vehicles can enter the market.

Although the filing indicates the redesigned Seagull is progressing toward commercial production, BYD has yet to announce when the new-generation model will officially go on sale.
