The European Commission has formally requested Amazon to provide comprehensive details on its efforts to adhere to obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA), focusing particularly on the transparency of its recommender systems, according to a statement released on Friday.
“In particular, Amazon is asked to provide detailed information on its compliance with the provisions concerning transparency of the recommender systems (…),” the EU statement clarified.
Amazon has been instructed to furnish the requested information by July 26, emphasizing the regulatory scrutiny on major technology firms’ responsibilities in managing illegal and harmful content on their platforms under the DSA.
“We are reviewing this request and working closely with the European Commission. Amazon shares the goal of the European Commission to create a safe, predictable and trusted shopping environment,” a spokesperson for Amazon stated in response to the EU’s directive.
The spokesperson further highlighted Amazon’s commitment to ensuring a secure and trustworthy shopping experience, emphasizing ongoing investments to protect its platform from illicit activities and to bolster compliance with DSA guidelines.
The Digital Services Act, aimed at enhancing accountability and user safety online, mandates greater transparency and responsibility from prominent technology companies operating within the European Union.
