Fisker, the US startup, has received its EPA range rating for the highly anticipated Ocean SUV, and it has outperformed electric rivals such as Tesla and Ford. According to the agency, the top-tier model, known as the Ocean Extreme, will impressively offer a driving range of 360 miles. In comparison, the Model Y Long Range, which currently holds the title of the world’s most popular electric vehicle, has an estimated range of 330 miles. However, the Tesla model comes at a lower price of $50,490 before government incentives.
With a maximum range of 360 miles, Fisker‘s upcoming SUV, its debut model, places itself ahead of a significant portion of the EV market, trailing only three cars: the Hyundai Ioniq 6 (361 miles), the Tesla Model S (405 miles), and the Lucid Air (516 miles).
The limited range has consistently been a top concern for potential EV buyers, which has motivated automakers to enhance efficiency and incorporate larger batteries into their new models. Currently, there are more EVs with 300 miles of range or more than ever before, reflecting the industry’s progress in this area.
Fisker commenced deliveries of the special launch edition, the Ocean One, in Europe in May. The company anticipates that deliveries in the United States will begin in June.
What sets the Ocean apart from its EV competitors are the unique features it offers. For instance, it boasts a screen that can swivel between landscape and portrait modes, providing enhanced versatility. Additionally, the vehicle’s roof is covered in solar panels, which contribute additional energy. Notably, Fisker announced in May that the Ocean would incorporate battery-swapping technology, enabling ultra-fast refueling stops.
While the entry-level Ocean is projected to cost $37,499 and provide a range of 250 miles, this figure has yet to be confirmed by the EPA.
