Infineon Technologies AG has officially inaugurated its Smart Power Fab in Dresden, Germany, following a €5 billion investment that establishes what the company describes as the world’s largest manufacturing facility dedicated to intelligent power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal devices.
Completed several months ahead of schedule, the project represents the largest single investment in Infineon’s history and one of Germany’s biggest industrial manufacturing projects, adding 1,000 direct jobs while significantly expanding Europe’s semiconductor production capacity.
Engineering Next-Generation Semiconductor Manufacturing
The Smart Power Fab doubles Infineon’s manufacturing capacity in Dresden, reinforcing the city’s position as the center of Europe’s Silicon Saxony semiconductor cluster.
Designed using advanced digital engineering techniques, the facility incorporates digital twin technology to optimize building layout, equipment placement and manufacturing workflows before production began.
Artificial intelligence is also integrated into production planning and process qualification, allowing faster commissioning of equipment and manufacturing lines.
The factory operates as part of Infineon’s One Virtual Fab network alongside its semiconductor facility in Villach, Austria, enabling engineers to qualify products and manufacturing processes across multiple sites simultaneously.
According to the company, these digital manufacturing technologies can reduce production ramp-up times by approximately half compared with conventional semiconductor fabrication facilities.
Chips for AI, Energy and Electric Mobility
The new production lines will manufacture power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal devices used in a broad range of high-growth industries.
Among the primary applications are power management systems for AI data centers, where efficient voltage regulation and energy conversion have become increasingly important as computing power continues to rise.
The chips will also support electric vehicles, software-defined vehicle platforms, industrial automation, renewable energy installations, wind turbines and solar power systems.
One example is intelligent power switches capable of both controlling electrical loads and monitoring current flow, improving efficiency across complex power electronics systems.
Chief Executive Officer Jochen Hanebeck said expanding manufacturing capacity is essential as demand accelerates across multiple industries.
“We’re opening our new plant at just the right time. Our Smart Power Fab is creating urgently needed capacities for the key technologies of the future, for everything from energy supply for AI data centers to software-defined vehicles and renewable energies.”
Strengthening Europe’s Semiconductor Ecosystem
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the project demonstrates Europe’s ability to manufacture advanced semiconductor technologies domestically.
“Power semiconductors are a key technology for the energy transition, the future of mobility and our AI infrastructure. The expansion of Infineon’s production capacity in Dresden strengthens our technological sovereignty and the resilience of important supply chains in Europe.”
German Digital Transformation Minister Dr. Karsten Wildberger added that the chips produced in Dresden will support industries ranging from electric vehicles to AI infrastructure.
Saxony Minister-President Michael Kretschmer described microelectronics as one of the defining technologies of the 21st century, noting that Dresden continues to strengthen its role as Europe’s largest semiconductor manufacturing cluster.
Today, the Silicon Saxony ecosystem already employs more than 80,000 people, with studies indicating that every cleanroom manufacturing position creates approximately six additional jobs across suppliers, engineering services and supporting industries.
Sustainable Fab Engineering
Beyond production capacity, the Smart Power Fab incorporates several engineering measures aimed at reducing environmental impact.
The manufacturing facility operates without natural gas while using closed-loop water management systems that recycle approximately 90% of process water.
Energy recovery technologies allow the plant to reclaim up to 45% of the energy used during semiconductor manufacturing, improving overall production efficiency while reducing resource consumption.
Supporting the AI Infrastructure Supply Chain
As AI computing systems continue expanding worldwide, demand is increasing not only for processors but also for the power electronics that distribute and regulate electricity throughout servers and data centers.
By combining advanced digital manufacturing, sustainable factory engineering and expanded semiconductor capacity, Infineon’s Smart Power Fab strengthens Europe’s position in the global semiconductor industry while supplying critical power management technologies for artificial intelligence, electrification and next-generation industrial systems.
