Sony has begun rolling out a new firmware update for the PlayStation 5 that introduces a power-saving mode designed to lower energy consumption during gameplay. The update will gradually become available to users worldwide over the coming days.
The mode is initially compatible with a limited number of titles, including Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Demon’s Souls and Ghost of Yōtei. When activated, an icon appears at game launch, indicating the mode is in use. Certain features and visual modes may be restricted, and PlayStation VR 2 is not supported. “The update introduces a brand-new power-saving mode that is intended to reduce power consumption while gaming,” Sony said in its announcement.
Users can manually enable the setting for supported games. While Sony has not detailed its technical impact, industry analysts noted the feature could be tied to the company’s longer-term plans for a next-generation handheld, which is rumored for release before 2028.
The update also expands connectivity for the DualSense controller, allowing it to pair with up to four devices simultaneously. Players can switch between devices using PlayStation button combinations, with LEDs indicating the active connection.
