Electronic Arts (EA) has brought back its long-dormant skateboarding series with the global launch of Skate 4 in Early Access, marking the franchise’s return after a 15-year hiatus. The free-to-play title went live on September 16 across multiple platforms with a staggered rollout to manage server demand.
The game introduces San Vansterdam, a new multiplayer city designed to host up to 150 players per server. Unlike previous installments, the title embraces a community-driven, always-online model that will evolve through player feedback and ongoing updates. “We’re thrilled to welcome everyone to San Vansterdam and the best skateboarding the franchise has ever delivered,” said Mike McCartney, Executive Producer of Skate.
San Vansterdam is divided into four neighborhoods — Hedgemont, Gullcrest, Market Mile and Brickswich — each offering unique skating environments. The game also supports full cross-platform play across PlayStation, Xbox and PC, while retaining the signature Flick-It control system with refinements for more precise trick execution. Off-board movement has been expanded, enabling players to climb and explore areas that were previously out of reach.
Skate 4 is structured around a live service model, with fresh content scheduled during Early Access and beyond. The first season begins in October 2025 with Halloween-themed events and the introduction of a new “skate.pass” battle pass system. Future updates, including new cooperative modes and tricks, are planned for December, with additional features extending into 2026.
The Early Access phase is expected to last about six months, with a full release targeted for 2026. EA’s Full Circle studio, based in Vancouver, said the extended period will allow for the integration of community feedback as the city of San Vansterdam expands.
