Nintendo has released its Virtual Boy virtual reality accessory for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles, marking the end of its pre-order period. The device, first announced in September 2025, is now available for direct purchase through Nintendo.
Designed for the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED models, the new Virtual Boy draws inspiration from the original Virtual Boy console released in 1995. Nintendo said the accessory, along with a lower-cost cardboard edition, is required to play the classic titles developed for the short-lived platform.

The accessory is priced at $99.99. Buyers must have a Nintendo account and an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to complete the purchase. Access to the stereoscopic 3D titles in the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics library also requires a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
While the original 1995 Virtual Boy received 22 games during its lifespan, Nintendo is launching the new platform with seven titles. The company said nine additional games will be added later this year, including two that were announced for the original console but were never released.

For consumers seeking a lower-cost option, Nintendo has also introduced a Virtual Boy cardboard model priced at $24.99. The simplified version is compatible with the same Switch consoles as the standard edition and is available for purchase through Nintendo.
The company said the VR accessory and cardboard model are “required to play the classic games released for the Virtual Boy console released in 1995,” underscoring their role in enabling access to the retro 3D game library.
