Spotify is introducing “About the Song,” a new feature designed to give listeners more insight into the stories and meaning behind the music they stream. The tool, currently in beta, is being rolled out to Premium subscribers on mobile devices in select English-speaking markets.
The feature appears within the Now Playing View of the Spotify app and presents short, swipeable story cards offering background information about supported tracks. According to the company, the content is summarized from third-party sources and highlights “interesting details and behind-the-scenes moments” tied to a song’s creation.

“Music fans know the feeling: A song stops you in your tracks, and you immediately want to know more,” Spotify said in a statement announcing the launch. The company added, “We believe that understanding the craft and context behind a song can deepen your connection to the music you love.”
The beta version of About the Song is available in English to Premium users in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. It is accessible on both iOS and Android devices, with no indication yet of when the feature may expand to additional regions or languages.

To access the tool, users can open the Now Playing View while listening to a supported track and scroll down to find the About the Song card. They can then swipe through multiple cards to explore related stories and contextual details.
Spotify said it plans to refine the feature based on user and artist feedback, which can be submitted directly through the card interface. The company described About the Song as “another step in our mission to bring you closer to the artists you love.”
