Google has for the past few years been ditching their Daydream VR headset project. This is reasonable, because this type of headset is not selling well in the market.
However, this doesn’t mean Google has completely given up on making headsets altogether. Because, in a recent report from Engadget (21/1), the giant search engine company is still developing new headsets, but is now focusing on AR headsets.
In the latest leak, Google calls this project as Project Iris. They have reportedly been working on this project for the past few years, and plan to release it in 2024.
This headset will use Google’s special processor. Not to forget, they will also feature an outward-facing tracking camera. For the OS itself, they use a specially made Android OS.
To work on this device, Google was involved with quite a number of important figures. Some of them include Clay Bavor, manager of Project Starline’s 3D telepresence booth; Google Assistant creator Scott Huffman; ARCore manager, Shahram Izadi; and Mark Lukovsky, former lead in internal OS development for Meta. The Pixel division is also believed to be involved in some hardware work.
Unfortunately, until now there has been no comment from Google, even though their CEO, Sundar Pichai, has hinted that AR is the company’s main focus at this time. However, the target to launch this tool in 2024 is quite ambitious.
