After being criticized for its algorithm, TikTok has finally made significant changes to its home page, also known as “For Your Page.” According to reports, some users are concerned that TikTok’s algorithm could push people into unhealthy or radical types of videos.
The mysterious TikTok algorithm has raised pros and cons. Along with the praise that claims algorithms help small creators reach their audiences, it’s also been met with scathing criticism because certain potentially harmful videos can emerge.
Instead of explaining how FYP actually works, the company is rolling out a new feature that allows users to avoid unwanted video content. It will also reduce the potential for harmful content to young users as well as make more diverse recommendations.
Reporting from The Independent (14/7), TikTok users can now add certain words or hashtags to filter FYP. TikTok gives an example, users can avoid videos related to meat and dairy products if they are following a plant-based diet.
In addition, TikTok is also rolling out a feature to diversify the types of uploads displayed, and avoid people getting caught up in connected topics, which may not be healthy for them. Those topics included, “diet, extreme fitness, grief, and other well-being topics,” says TikTok.
TikTok has also added new “Content Levels” which are similar to the age rating system used in TV and movies. Content that is too mature will be hidden from people under the age of 18.
The company says the new features will roll out in the coming weeks.
