Dongfeng Wins Approval for World’s First Mass-Produced EV With Four In-Wheel Motors

China’s Dongfeng Motor Corporation has gained regulatory approval to release what is set to become the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle featuring four in-wheel hub motors, according to filings from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The development signals a shift in focus among Chinese automakers from high-speed motor performance toward simplifying drivetrains and improving efficiency.

The approved model, a variant of the Dongfeng eπ 007 sedan, will be equipped with four axial flux “pancake” motors supplied by Shanghai Automobile Electric Drive, each capable of producing 100 kW of peak power for a total output of around 536 horsepower. The system’s direct-wheel configuration removes the need for many traditional drivetrain parts, resulting in a lighter structure and improved power-to-weight ratio.

Unlike previous limited-production vehicles using hub motors, Dongfeng’s model eliminates conventional disc brakes, pads, and calipers, instead using magnetic braking and electronic wheel locking for parking. The design enables independent wheel control, allowing better traction management and tighter cornering. The configuration also improves energy recuperation by up to 25% during braking and enhances overall drivetrain efficiency by around 30% compared with conventional setups.

The absence of mechanical components such as driveshafts and CV joints creates additional space for batteries and passengers, offering both structural and design benefits. Despite the changes, the new eπ 007 variant maintains the same external dimensions as other versions of the sedan, ensuring compatibility with existing production and design standards.

Dongfeng has not yet confirmed a market launch date, though industry expectations suggest the hub motor eπ 007 could debut around the Beijing Auto Show in spring 2026. The approval reinforces China’s position as a leader in electric vehicle engineering, following advancements such as BYD’s Super e-Platform, which incorporates a 30,000 rpm motor to push the limits of EV performance.
