A redesigned version of the Fitbit mobile application may be in development, with early indications pointing to changes in navigation and the introduction of new sleep-related metrics, according to recent reports.

Code discovered in Fitbit app version 4.60, released in early January, suggests that the company is working on a new tab structure alongside additional tools to analyse sleep. The findings were first reported by Gadgets and Wearables, which said the update could affect users of devices such as the Fitbit Charge 6.

One of the features under development appears to be a new “Sleep Need” metric, which would estimate how much rest a user requires. According to strings found in the app’s code, the feature would include “a detailed breakdown to explain how your sleep need was calculated,” offering more transparency around the score.

A second metric, called “Sleep Debt,” is also referenced in the code. Messages such as “Less than usual may mean you’ve built up some ‘sleep debt’, and you may want to take it easy” suggest the tool would assess how recent sleep patterns may be affecting energy levels. Both metrics were previously tested in Fitbit’s Personalized Sleep Schedule Lab.

The code also points to a potential redesign of the app’s navigation, with evidence that dedicated Fitness and Sleep tabs could return, replacing the current three-tab layout introduced in 2023. Fitbit has not confirmed the changes, and the company has not indicated when the updated app might be released for iOS and Android users.
