Tesla has begun offering a complimentary 30-day trial of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to owners of vehicles equipped with its latest Hardware 4.0 (HW4) computer and camera system, in a move aimed at increasing adoption of the advanced driver-assistance system and generating more real-world driving data.

Emails are being sent to an estimated 1.5 million eligible owners across North America and Puerto Rico, inviting them to activate the trial. The offer applies to newer Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and Cybertruck vehicles running the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) 14.2 software update. Tesla normally charges US$99 per month for the subscription or US$8,000 for full purchase.

The campaign follows lower-than-expected uptake among owners despite having vehicles technically capable of running the latest FSD release. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has described version 14 — and the upcoming 14.3 update — as a major technological advancement. The original article stated that Musk considers FSD 14 and its next iteration to be “a quantum leap in self-driving capabilities.”

Tesla says the current FSD 14 software is designed to handle routine driving scenarios as well as edge cases without driver intervention, although the system still requires supervision. The trial includes access to features such as Speed Profiles, including “Mad Max” and “Sloth Mode,” and the Arrival Options self-parking tool.

Owners of older HW3-equipped vehicles are excluded from the offer. Instead, Tesla plans to introduce an FSD 14 Lite variant for those cars, rather than retrofitting them with newer AI4 hardware. The update is not expected until after the company expands its Robotaxi platform into more metropolitan markets later this quarter and into early 2026.

Tesla has indicated that vehicles running “14.2 or later software” qualify for the free trial, suggesting the long-teased FSD 14.3 release could arrive before the end of the year. If so, many trial users could receive the upgraded version before their 30 days expire.
